Veterinary Services

Dr. Pam Walker has over 7 years of practical hands-on experience here at our farm, and 14+ years of teaching and emergency experience working with llamas and alpacas.  In addition to working at Alpaca Jack's she currently is a Clinical Assistant Professor at Ohio State Veterinary Teaching Hospital, and teaches senior veterinary students in food and fiber animal rotations.  Dr. Walker teaches herd health seminars nationwide, and trains veterinarians from around the country on our farm.  She is available here by appointment Tuesday through Friday, and is available for same-day emergency.

There are many causes of neurologic problems in neonatal and mature camelids, some more common than others. As owners it is very important to know what is “normal” for each of your animals, keeping in mind that some animals may have some odd things that are “normal” for them! It is also easy to confuse weakness from illness with neurologic signs. I will present the information based on age, then in more detail for the problems that are not age related.

Parasite Control for your Alpaca Herd

In the face of information learned by parasitologists and veterinarians over the past few years; alpaca owners need to revisit their thoughts and protocols on parasite control and herd heatlh. In the past our accepted protocol was that of banket-use of preventative de-wormers on our entire herd at regular intervals. What we have found is that despite our best efforts - which were based on industry standards and recommendation by veterinarians, we still saw the development of resistant parasites.
